are you up for the challenge?

As this is Synesthesia’s first event of any kind and my first time organizing a contest, there’s probably still info I forgot to cover. Email me or comment if you have any questions!

As the title suggests, this is more of a challenge than tournament—instead of working on one graphic to submit, each contestant must create a collection of four icons to correspond with the four themes given in his/her chosen theme set. Click here for the different theme sets.

Begins: April 15, 2008
Submission Deadline: TBH

General Rules & Notes

  • Think outside the box! There aren’t any requirements to explicitly show images of each theme for each icon; themes can be implied. There’s lots of room to be creative and original. With that being said, be careful to not stray too far and make a totally irrelevant icon.
  • Send entries to yunri.chan [at] gmail [dot] com as a zip file. Please include your name, email, site URL (if applicable), the letter of the theme set you chose, credits and any additional comments. Please also title all entries with the number and name of the specific theme it represents. (ie. 03 – gamble)
  • Only one collection/entry per person.
  • All icons must be made for this contest. After the contest is over though, you're free to do whatever you'd like with them.
  • It’d be greatly appreciated if you placed the contest banner on your site or linked back! (:

    • Once this preliminary contest is over, the top five finalists will be announced, and there will be one further round with a new graphics-related challenge to determine the competition winner and second place runner-up. :3

    Prizes

    The winner has first priority to choose any two prizes from the list below; the second place winner gets to choose one after that.

    – $20 cash prize (probably money order)
    – One free domain (.com, .net, .org) + hosting at Servage.Net (one year)

    – One piece of customized artwork by the famed CuteMew, payment courtesy of me

    In addition, the winner receives an offer of affiliation with Synesthesia. Both winner & runner-up will also receive award signs, a chance to exchange links with Synesthesia and shameless advertising for an indefinite period on Synesthesia. A People’s Choice Award will be given to the contestant with the most votes. All participants will receive a participation banner & advertising for a month, and finalists receive a finalist banner as well! [:

    Judging/Voting

    After the entries for the main/first round are all turned in, each contestant’s collection will be posted for the public and open for voting. Based on the vote results and personal opinion*, two judges (me and another, TBA!) will ultimately choose five designers who will advance to the final/second round, which will have a different challenge.

    The second round will be judged in a similar manner—voting for one portion, and three judges (me and two others, also TBA). Then the winner & runner-up will be announced.

    The People’s Choice Award (first round only) is solely determined by the voting; if it so happens to be one of the winners, consider it a bonus!

    * Collections are judged based on aesthetics and ingenuity. Originality and extra effort (ie. having a collective theme for all four icons) will also be noted of course.
